Semplicità e complessità
Philosophy, science and Gestalt psychotherapy
Philosophy, science and psychotherapy speak different languages. In this book, I follow them as they approach the same question: how to inhabit the complexity of existence and choose a direction towards the future.

Simplifying without trivialising
Understanding human experience involves considering how a person and their environment influence each other. Complexity also lies in these connections: what happens takes on different meanings within each person’s history and circumstances.
A person may feel different needs and desire things that are difficult to reconcile. Contradictory emotions can also coexist. This complexity is not an error to eliminate: it belongs to experience and calls for attention.
Understanding inevitably requires simplification. The problem arises when a person is reduced to a formula or confined within a label. Without any simplification, knowledge becomes impossible; through trivialisation, however, we lose precisely what we wanted to understand.
Simplicity is a method. Complexity is what the method needs to do justice to.
From the surface to the depths, and back
Gestalt psychotherapy takes up this challenge by starting from immediate experience. It follows the passage from feeling to the way a person thinks and acts, through to the deeper connections within their existence. The phenomenological method helps suspend premature explanations and encounter the uniqueness of a story.
The conditions that shape a life remain real. Within those limits, a person can recognise their freedom and take responsibility for the direction they choose.
